Consent for Participation

You are invited to participate in Chat2Learn, a program conducted by faculty and staff at The University of Chicago that aims to boost children’s vocabulary, language skills, and curiosity.
What will I be asked to do as a participant?
- You will be asked to receive and respond to text messages via your phone’s messaging app.
- You will be asked to notify us if your cell phone number changes at any point throughout the duration of the program.
- You will be asked to engage in conversations with your child.You may receive different materials than other parents/caregivers in the program.
- You will be asked to allow the Chat2Learn team to receive data about you and your child that is collected by your school or organization.
Program Length
Your active participation in the program will last nine (9) months, and your data may be accessed for 24 months.
Sharing Data
You will provide data about you and your child including:
- Contact information such as your phone number, your first name, and your child’s first name
- Personal information such as your child’s date of birth and gender, your zip code, and your education level
What are the benefits of participating?
Chat2Learn aims to boost children’s vocabulary, language skills, and curiosity. This program provides you with conversation prompts intended to help you and your child develop a routine of learning through conversation.
What risks are associated with participating?
Your participation in Chat2Learn does not involve any risk to you beyond that of everyday life.
What are my rights as a participant?
Your participation is voluntary. You have the right not to participate at all or to choose to leave the program at any time. You may stop participating in Chat2Learn by texting STOP to any text messages received or by contacting Sarah Mogan at The University of Chicago by telephone at (773) 648-7180, or by email at sarahmogan@uchicago.edu. Deciding not to participate or choosing to stop part way through the study will not result in any penalty and will not harm your relationship to your school or organization.
What policies and procedures are in place to protect my confidentiality?
The Chat2Learn team will take all possible measures to ensure that any information you provide will be kept confidential and anonymous, and to protect any information collected as a part of this project from disclosure, tampering, or damage.
- Information that contains your name or any other identifying variables will not be viewed by anyone except authorized members of the Chat2Learn team.
- All identifying data will be removed from the information collected after the study ends and before the data analysis process begins. Information coded will be identified using a random participant ID and the individuals completing data analysis will not be able to link the data back to you or your child’s personal information.
- If you decide to withdraw from the study, data collected up until the point of withdrawal may still be included in the analysis or research.
- All information that we collect will be kept in password-protected files on password protected computers or secure cloud storage that are only accessible to the Chat2Learn team.
- Data collected may be used at a future date for scientific analysis not included in this consent form. However, this data would be completely anonymous and all identifying information would be removed.
- Data collected for Chat2Learn may be shared with others for the purpose of scientific inquiry. However, any data that is shared would be completely anonymous and all identifying information will have been removed.
- An exception to our promise of confidentiality is that we will report any evidence of child abuse or neglect. In addition, if we think there is any information provided that shows that any child intends to harm him/herself or others, we will notify appropriate people/agencies with this information.

Participation is voluntary. Refusal to participate or withdrawing from the research will involve no penalty or loss of benefits to which you might otherwise be entitled.
